The essential function of art is moral. Not aesthetic, not decorative, not pastime and recreation. The essential function of art is moral.
D.H. Lawrence, Studies in Classic American Literature, quoted by Harold Bloom in Genius

  • Auditions
  • Immediately preceding the beginning of the new season, auditions are held to fill any vacancies existing in the orchestra. Depending upon the needs of the orchestra, students may audition after the season has begun. Students are asked to play a solo and scales; sight-reading is also required. A fee of $10 is charged for the audition. Interested musicians should contact Pam Nogal to schedule an audition. Acceptance into MYSO requires payment of a $200 membership fee and a sincere commitment by the musician to attend each rehearsal and performance.

  • College Credit Option
  • High School students who meet the requirements of Joliet Junior College and Lewis University may take MYSO for college credit. The requirements of the institutions are outlined in their respective catalogs, which are available from high school guidance counselors or by contacting the college or university directly. Credit hour fees are applicable at JJC and Lewis University.

Because the orchestra is dependent on revenues from membership fees and ticket sales for its operating expenses, MYSO high school students earning college credit must pay all MYSO fees and fulfill the obligation to purchase tickets.

High School seniors in the top 10 percent of their class who are recommended by their guidance counselors may take MYSO for Lewis University credit without paying tuition.
